Kompær Lapin

When I was a little girl, my father told us stories about the smart, slick rabbit.  One time, I told him that he stole a particular story from Bugs Bunny.  He told me that Bugs Bunny stole that story from him.  I did not understand what he was saying.  Today, I know.

The stories of the smart, slick rabbit are stories that have been told orally in the New World for generations.  These stories came to the Americas by way of enslaved people from Africa.  The tales vary in different regions.  In Louisiana, the rabbit is known as Kompær Lapin/Compère Lapin. 

This pink blanket shows Kompær Lapin hopping along probably running from or headed towards some kind of mischief.  The border of the blanket is a thick ruffle which depicts the brier patch where, as everyone except probably Bouki knows, Lapin was born.

Louisiana Creole Flag Blanket

This blanket is like the Louisiana Creole Heritage Flag.  The original Louisiana Creole Flag was designed by Peter Bergeron in 1987.

I made the fleur-dê-lis and the castle a little larger because the blanket is for a baby. That is why it says ti Kréyol. It is made as a cover for a baby crib.

The flag has:  a fleur-de-lis for our French heritage; the Flag of Senegal; the Flag of Mali; the Flag of Castile for our Spanish heritage; a white cross which represents both our Native American heritage (the four winds) and our Catholic traditions.

The Attakapas, the Bambara, the Chitimacha, the Choctaw, the French, the Fulani, the Spanish, the Wolof, and others in French and Colonial Louisiana formed a new unique culture, the Louisiana Creole culture.

We are still here.

I crocheted this blanket for a friend who is also a Louisiana Creole.  When she told me she was pregnant, I knew I wanted to make something which expressed our shared culture.  The blanket says fé dodo ti bébé.  Fé dodo is a way to tell little children to go to sleep.  My friend told me that her grandmother tucked her own mother to sleep with the words fé dodo.

Now, my friend can wrap her own baby in the Creole culture and say “fé dodo” to her children just like our ancestors.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month/ Lung Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Although I have not been able to do much crocheting in the past couple of weeks, my sister has been quite busy.  I saw her today at Sunday dinner and she showed me these wonderful hats she is making for her co-workers.

She also made a purple hat for a co-worker whose mother has lung cancer.  The ribbon on this hat is white with a set of pearls on one end.  Lung Cancer Awareness Month is in November.

Love them.  She just needs to sew the ribbons on.  Both of us do not mind sewing clothes or curtains. However, we do not like to sew our crocheted items.  You can tell we are sisters.

Frogging This

I crocheted two houndstooth scarves so far.  I like the black/white and the brown/beige scarves. I started another one, but I don't like it. Two reasons: I used a different brand of yarn and both colors are dark. The gray is so dark that the pattern cannot be seen.  It looks not so good in this picture and in person, it is worse - a hot mess.  So, I'm frogging it.  I guess I'll try a lighter gray. Hmmm, what to do with the dark gray yarn? Make a hat, of course.  I think the dark gray will make a nice cable or basketweave hat for a man.

On the Lookout

People have requested this hat more than any others I have crocheted. This is the only multi-color one I crocheted.  It is brown, purple, and beige.  I kept it for myself, but I rarely wear it. Although I LOVE to crochet hats, hats and me - I don't know.

I made this hat in terracotta for one of my best friends, but she lost it while on vacation.  She has been asking me to make another one ever since. I would have done it already because I love her dearly.  However, there is one problem. The yarn I would use to make this hat was discontinued. Boo!

Therefore, Labor Day weekend, I will go out looking for a suitable replacement yarn.  I hope it comes out nicely.  It will be nice to surprise her for Christmas. The pattern is Lion Brand Suede Cap.

Hounds Tooth Scarf for Christmas

I am almost done with the hounds tooth scarf.  I just need to sew it together since it will be an infinity scarf.  I really liked this pattern because it is a classic design and it works up quickly.  It has been a while since I crocheted for my sisters-in-law for Christmas, so I think this is the pattern I will use.  I will make them in brown and beige, and burgundy and pink.  I think I will make one for myself in burgundy and gray.  If I have time, I might make matching hats.  The hats, I think will be mostly solid with just a bit of the hounds tooth pattern.  I got this pattern from Elk Studio.

Kroshé é kréyol

So, I have not been able to do as much crocheting these past couple of years.  I had an injury to my arm which made crocheting (writing, typing, and just about everything) difficult.  My doctor said stop using your left arm… but I’m left handed. It was hard, but I followed his directions as much as possible. After learning to use my right hand for the mundane things we all take for granted, and some therapy, my arm is usable again. My first project here reflects what I was doing with my crochet time. 

I started to seriously research my family history.  My genealogy efforts led me to find people who teach Louisiana Creole. So, I began to learn/relearn Louisiana Creole.  I grew up hearing Louisiana Creole and Louisiana French spoken in our home and from some of our Chicago neighbors, but for reasons similar to those of many other Louisiana Creoles from Louisiana, from around the country, and from around the world, I was not encouraged to speak the language(s). Therefore, I learned very little as a young person. Now, though, I am learning lots and lots. In any case, when my physical therapist told me I can begin to slowly use my hand again, this was one of the first projects that came to mind. I guess you can say I have Creole on the brain… and I like it.

This hat says, Mo çé Kréyol – I am Creole. The colors are the colors of the Louisiana Creole Flag.  I made it with my niece in mind, but it is more of a statement piece. This particular pattern is not mine, but I put my own spin to it. (The pattern is Kool Rock Ski from Afya Ibomu.)

I think I may need to rename this blog Kroshé é kréyol – Crochet and Creole.  LOL

And the sad news, one of my wonderful dogs, Chaos (the one on the right in the picture), died since I last wrote here. We miss him tremendously.  Trouble, always my constant companion, is still with us. Golden doodles are the best dogs, truly.

Graphs - Kente/Adinkra Inspired Baby Blankets

Although I made these graphs for baby blankets, they can be used for other crafts.  The pink blanket was completed a few years ago and the blue blanket remains a WIP.  I originally posted the completed blanket on September 2009 and on January 2010.  I am only posting some of the adinkra symbols. Each graph is 28 by 36. I will post the kente inspired graphs at a later date.  By the way, the baby hat is the Squiggles and Grin pattern from Lion Brand Yarn.

Warrior

I was playing around with Fibonacci patterns when this hat was created.  It looks like a warrior's helmet.  I used some left over Sweet Delight Baby Yarn by Baby Bee that I purchased from Hobby Lobby joined together with Jojoland Melody Superwash Yarn that I purchased at a local yarn shop. I have not tested the pattern, so let me know if you find any glitches.

Mediterranian Clapochet

I finally made the Clapochet scarf/shawl which is a pattern by Crochet Kitten.  I used Stitch Nation Full o' Sheep by Red Heart Yarn in the mediterranian color (the true color is more turquoise looking than the picture shows.  It took 3.2 skeins.  It is made on the diagonal and is about 6 feet long.  If I had shortened the length a little, I could have gotten away with just 3 skeins.  What to do with the extra yarn?  My favorite thing..make a hat, of course.  I found those cute buttons at Wal-Mart. 

The Clapochet is based on the knitted Clapotis pattern by Kate Gilbert. Since my knitting skills are not yet up to par, I opted for the crochet version. Both patterns are free. 

Hoot, Hoot, Hoot Knew? Owls!!!!

Who knew that there were owls hiding in those trees near my home? Headed out in the early morning with the local Audubon Society to see the owls in the area.  We had a great time.  Wish I had a telescopic camera.

The weather was decent.  It got somewhat cold trudging through the snow. (Got a good workout, yeah!)

Hibernating Blanket

It has been a while since I have posted.  With this freezing weather, my walks have become quick runs outside and back. My dogs are racing me back into the house.  So you know it has been cold.  I have been crocheting, though.  I have worked on quite a few quick projects.

 My main project, the Kente-Inspired Boy Blanket has been hibernating for months!!!!  I am posting pics in an effort to put it back in my mind to finish.  It is about 80% finished now.  I used Candi Jensen Designer Sport Yarn.  It is a bit stiffer than the Kente-Inspired Baby Girl Blanket and is suitable for hanging.  We will see....

A Beautiful Morning

Whenever we are on this trail, my dog Chaos stops at the exact same spot.  He faces the water and looks out into the distance with the breeze flowing against his face.  He stands there for a very long time until finally I (or my other dog, Trouble), am ready to move on.   One time, the lake was filled with hundreds of geese.  I practically had to drag him away.  I felt so bad. He just knew that there was something about water and geese that he should be excited about.  [Although they are litter mates, Trouble pretty much could care less.]

Yesterday, at sunrise, the weather was perfect, the geese were flying in the distance, and we walked almost a mile down the trail and back before we saw anyone.  I was glad I had my cell phone so that I could capture that peaceful moment in time.

How to Rationalize a WIP into a FO

This poncho was started about a year ago.  I got the pattern from a Groovy Crochet website, which has groovy crochet patterns from the 1970's.  I had some left over Baby Bee Yarn from Hobby Lobby and some Redheart Yarn of various earth tone colors to work with.  When I ran out of the Baby Bee Yarn,  I stopped working on the poncho.

This weekend, I pulled the poncho out of the closet and began to rationalize my "work in progress" into a "finished object:"  I really did not want a long poncho anyway.  A longer poncho would be heavier.  I am a short person, so I don't need a long poncho.  I can throw this on and still have my arms free... and so on and so on. 

I finished the poncho with a single crochet edging and viola - a WIP turned into a FO.  Anyway, I love the colors: Sage green  Baby Bee Yarn held throughout with interchanging claret, taupe, and brown Redheart Yarn.  It is so me!

The best part is that it was made with leftover scrap yarn.

Skwappi (the hat)

Seems like I am always trying to decrease my stash.  The more I try, the more it grows.  (You know how it goes...)  Anyway, I grabbed a hook and went to work on a stash busting hat.  The resulting color scheme was certainly different, but I sort of like it.  The pattern is pretty basic.  If you are a beginner, you might be able to use this pattern to practice your skills.

I finished the Kente Inspired Baby Girl Blanket.  Although it started out as "kente inspired,"  I used more adinkra symbols than my original plan called for.  I guess I should call it "Adinkra inspired."    Besides the gye nyame symbol which is the most recognizable, the other symbols represent: strength, perseverence, wisdom, abundance, and femininity.  I am already making another blanket using water blue colors.  I have not decided on the symbols yet. But, it will be for the next baby boy in the family.  Instead of using Hobby Lobby's Yarn Bee Sweet Delight yarn, this time I am trying Red Heart's Candi Jensen Designer Sport.  We will see how it goes....
Oh yeah, I made a hat with left over yarn.  The pattern is the Squiggles and Grin Baby Hat  from Lion Brand.  This hat is just too cute.

Wisdom and Creativity

Here is another symbol for the baby blanket. I am choosing adinkra symbols which reflect my good wishes for the new baby. This symbol means wisdom and/or creativity. The color in the picture is not as vivid as the actual pink Baby Bee yarn... but it will have to do until I get a new camera.
